Kirkuk (also spelled Karkuk or Kerkuk), Kurdish:کهرکووک, Arabic: كركوك, Turkish: Kerkük, Syriac: ܐܪܦܗܐ, is a city in Iraq and capital of Kirkuk Governorate.
It is located at 35.47°N, 44.41°E, in the Iraqi governorate of Kirkuk, 250 kilometres (156 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad. The Kirkuk region lies among the Zab River and the Tigris River to the west, the Hamrin Mountains to the south, and the Sirwan (Diyala) River to the south-east.
Kirkuk is the centre of the northern Iraqi petroleum industry. It is an historically and ethnically mixed city populated by Kurds, Assyrians,Turkmen and Arabs. Kerkuk is a city rich in both oil and history. Home to Kurds, Turkmen, Arabs, Chaldean-Assyrians, and other indigenous communities.
