Broumana, which lies on a hilltop overlooking the sea, combines the charms of a traditional Lebanese summer town with big city variety.

Here you'll find a number of old houses dating from the time of the Abillama Emirs in the 18th and the 19th centuries, while north of the village stands the huge Maronite monastery of Deir Mar Chaaya, built in 1700. An international tennis tournament takes place each summer at the Broummana High School, a Quaker institution. (http://www.middleeast.com/broumana.htm)

As most of the villages, Brummana has an Aramaic name which most probably means house of Rammana, the God of Air, Storm and Thunder: In the location where Brummana was built it was thought that the god “Raymond” in Aramaic or “Ramano” in Assyrian lived in, which gave the name “Beit Roumana” (or House of Roumana), and it is known that the letter B at the beginning of the name of villages refers to “Beit” in Arabic meaning “House” in English. After the massacres of 1860 and the Mute sarrifiate System, Brummana witnessed a cultural and social growth thanks to the British, French, Swiss and German's presence, which was crucial to Brummana's booming.

The role of the foreign missionaries introduced important changes to the Brummanians' lifestyle, through the services they offered on the medical, educational and cultural levels.
This missionary effort has focused on organizing and maintaining schools; and hospitals, as well as on forming and sustaining new Quaker groups.

In fact, they built a hospital, a dispensary, as well as schools and they introduced some of their traditions to its society as the 3Ts (Tea, Talk & Tennis): 5 o'clock Tea parties, Talk gathering and tennis activities.

The Quakers (English Religious Foundation), in establishing “The Friends” who founded in the last quarter of the 19th century an important educational institution for boys (B.T.H. - Boys Training Home) and girls (G.T.H. - Girls Training Home), and a boarding school, then a hospital and a dispensary, and introduced sports activities (tennis in particular) to Brummana.
