For the fourth year in a row, Kibarouna NGO organized its Summer Camp, from September 13 till September 17, for the most disadvantaged group of elderly in collaboration with the “Social Development center Burj Hamoud”, “ Rifak Al Darb”,” Caritas Antilias”, and “ Mat’am Al mahabi Sin El Fil”.
This amazing collaborative work enabled “Kibarouna” NGO to welcome 40 Elderly in the Monastery of Mar Yousif Ajaltoun in a loving and caring environment. Besides socializing and having fun, a main objective of the camp was to train the elderly in developing skills to look after their health, as a proactive measure.
This objective was achieved under the close supervision and mentorship of the Nursing School’s Interns from Saint Joseph University. The interns worked with a group of volunteers many of whom are members of “Kibarouna” NGO and others are from the community. The elderly were engaged in hands on health care activities, such as physical exercises, memory games, nutrition awareness, and personal hygiene.
The Elderly especially enjoyed social games and entertainment by singing and dancing with their new friends from the camp.
The camp closure ceremony was very touching as the Elderly expressed their appreciation for “Kibarouna” NGO for giving them very happy moments to warm their lonely days.
A grand ceremony attended by more than eight hundred fifty (850) Elderly from different parts of Lebanon, was held by Kibarouna NGO to celebrate ” Grandparents' Day ” on Friday June 25 in” Kasr Al Mo’tamarat”.
This yearly event , so much waited for, by many Elderly organizations and Institutions was really remarkable. The performance of the Classical Music Brass Band of the Internal Security Forces ( ISF) captured everyone’s heart. The Famous Star Grace Dib, and many other singers, dabke dancers, poets, and speakers were there to wish, all Grandparents of Lebanon, a Happy Day and to assert that they are advocate of the Elderly's rights. The Ceremony was eagerly presented by the very eloquent and popular Miss Grace Al Rayess.
An impressive speech was delivered , by Kibarouna’ president, Mrs. Henriette Haddad. Her voice restlessly called the Nation to take action: to care and protect the Elderly population of Lebanon. Her words acknowledged over and over the values of the Elderly citizens and their role in preserving the country and the culture of Lebanon.
Mrs. Haddad also presented the activities held by the Kibarouna NGO volunteers : A weekly club, workshops, Grandparents’ day yearly celebration, and the Summer Camp. Mrs. Haddad adressed many heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers and donors.
A highlight of the ceremony, was Kibarouna presenting awards and flowers to all the contributors to the Event and to more than twenty five directors of institutions who serve the Elderly with tireless devotion.

A special poem for all the Grandparents of Lebanon.
Grandparents and grandchildren,
Together they create a chain of love
Linking the past,
With the future.
The chain may lengthen,
But it will never part.

A group of Kibarouna, passionate about life, took the road from Bikfaya to Jizzine where they spent a whole day visiting historical and religious places among which the monastery of “ The Lady of Mashmoushi”.
Later they had a homemade lunch prepared by the devoted Kibarouna members. The Elderly sat in groups eating and chatting happily and simply postponing the call to take the road back home.

Kibarouna took the road to the wonderful Khenchara village known for its traditional red-roofed houses and mostly for the St. John’s Monastery founded 1696-97. Our elderly group was warmly welcomed by the priests who proudly spoke about the Historical Monastery.
After taking part in a heart –warming mass, they had breakfast and then visited the first Arabic printing Press of the Middle East. A five-room museum which displays the old presses and hundreds of related objects and pieces of equipment dated to 1726 and 1733.
Later the group spent time purchasing fresh goodies prepared by the priests to take home as gifts for their loved ones.

Senior citizens of Kibarouna are now involved in a recycling project launched by members of T.E.R.R.E Liban - Beit Shabab. During a workshop held last Wednesday April 21st, at the monastery of Mar Youssef Bhorsaf, senior citizens learned about recycling and its effect on the environment. Later they eagerly committed themselves to take action and start sorting out their domestic garbage of plastic, glass, and paper.
Currently and on weekly basis, all Kibarouna members will dispose their sorted garbage in recycling bins provided by T.E.R.R.E Liban- Beit Shabab. All bins are stationed in the Monastery Yard.
Yesterday when I was talking to some elderly during a breakfast gathering held by Kibarouna, I asked some elderly about their opinion regarding the recycling initiative after one week of the workshop.
They shared with me that they are so happy to be part of this project. They added that recycling is a responsible act to protect the environment which is a central heritage of our country Lebanon. While having this conversation I saw an old lady collecting three plastic water bottles, she put them in a bag and I heard her say to a group: “ This is the bag for plastic recycling, you can put your empty bottles here”.

On Wednesday 24th March, Kibarouna NGO launched their yearly activities by celebrating Mother’s Day with a brunch held at Saint Joseph Monastery in Bhorsaf.
More than ninety elderly attended and were warmly welcomed with hugs and flowers by Kibarouna members, volunteers and dear friends.
Two messages for the precious elderly mothers: Firstly “Thank You for your devotion and sacrifice as mothers, and secondly “Your role doesn’t stop here. As grandmothers you remain actively involved in raising your grandchildren especially at difficult times when they will turn to you as a source of unconditional love and guidance”.
With happiness filling the air, Kibarouna members look forward to successfully planning for the upcoming events of year 2010-2011: Weekly club activities on Wednesdays, monthly trips, “Grandparents Day” in June and the “Summer Camp”. All the activities aim at enhancing the elderly citizens’ social interaction and eliminating social isolation.
Special thanks go to Kibarouna’s volunteers and supporters for their generous contributions in many different ways.

Last Wednesday October 7th, about fifty elderly citizens left solitude and boredom behind at home and hit the road together with “Kibarouna” NGO members ,to enjoy a trip to the North of Lebanon. They all looked forward to good company and homemade food.
The group first stopped by our Lady of” Nouriye “ and from there headed toward the “Benashi” lake. But most of their day was spent on the wholly premises of ” Um Al Marahem” in Miziara where they had lunch on a lovely terrace ,overlooking the green olive trees of Koura and the deep blue sea of Tripoli.
Their voices raised sometimes with prayers and other times with laughters over stories from the present and the past.
As the sun was setting in the horizons of Lebanon, our elderly friends made their way back home, but this time with exciting stories, from the day, to share with their loved ones.
Once again, Kibarouna organized a successful summer camp in Ajaltoun, where 50 disadvantaged elderly from different parts of Lebanon were welcomed in St Joseph covent to spend a special time. In collaboration with the USJ volunteers/social workers, Mrs. Henriette Haddad, Kibarouna president, organized a five day program catering to all needs of elderly wellbeing, namely social, emotional and cognitive by engaging them in different, exciting activities.
On the last day of the camp, elderly from various NGO's and areas in Lebanon were invited to join the group and attend an entertaining program with dinner.
The highlight of the evening was a celebration of an elderly couple's 50th wedding anniversary. Also, Kibarouna's friend, Mrs. Therese Hawwat, performed special Oum Koulthoum songs, much to the audience's enjoyment and awe.
This camp would not have been possible without the assistance of many young volunteers and many of Kibarouna's members.

She fixes hurts with a kiss and smile
and tells good stories grandma-style.
It's warm and cozy on her lap
for secret telling or a nap.
And when I say my prayer at night,
I ask God to bless and hold her tight.
Cause when it comes to giving hugs
my grandma's arms are filled with love!
